I have never owned a cat....I have two dogs now, but we have had fish and turtles as well. But the best pet ever is a snake. We have had 3 snakes now and I think we will always have a pet snake!
They do not bark, they do not go outside for hours and then come inside and piss on the floor, and they do not need to be fed daily. We have had two ball pythons and one burmese python. The burmese python just got too big and was too aggressive for us. He was given to us from a friend who was moving and he was supposed to come pick him up when he got settled. But not all Burmese pythons are like that, some are very easy to handle. This one just did not get handled enough to get used to human contact.
Our snake does not eat when the weather is cold. So we do not need to worry about feeding him from October until usually the end of March. During the spring and summer and early fall, we give our snake one rat per week. Within a few days of him eating he poops and then he sheds about once every few weeks when he is eating. Snakes are very low maintenance and often provide entertainment for neighbohood children. We have many kids who stop by and ask when we are going to feed our snake. They know that during the summer we usually do it late Sunday afternoons. My daughters have friends who ask us to let them know so they can come and watch him eat.
It is one thing to see a snake eat something on television, but when you see it with your own two eyes, it is an amazing process. We can take the snake out of his tank and let him slither around our neck and shoulders. He loves the body heat we produce and will snuggle into your clothing to stay warm.
If anyone is looking for a low cost, low maintenance, entertaining pet, try getting a snake. I recommend the ball python. They typically only grow to about 5 feet long!
Never had a snake myself, a friend of mine had a pet snake ( not sure what kind of snake) and it seemed low maintenance. When your over at someones house that owns a snake and they say " I lost my pet" you seem to become more alert!! This happened and when you wake-up with a snake on your leg it freaks you out. That is my only experience with snakes.Needles to say I do not own any snakes, though I agree they sound like low maintenance.
ReplyDeleteWow! I don't think I'm ready for a snake, but I'd be like the kids in your neighborhood .... stopping by to watch the snake eat.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I could ever have a snake as a pet. I do not like any kind of slithery animal. I have heard of snakes getting into your house and that freaks me out too. You've got to have some kudos for having that kind of pet.
ReplyDeleteMy son used to date a girl that had a Ball Python for a pet. They would talk about it feeding and it sounded interesting. I am a critter lover and had pet mice, hamsters, rabbits, dogs, parakeets when I was a kid but never a snake. Although I did have some green eels in an aquarium once and my cat would go beserk and bat at the aquarium. She would puff up and tippie toe and hiss. It was funny. I don't think I could watch a feeding. I am too sympathetic to the critters who become "lunch."
ReplyDeleteWe can only handle a dog and a fish in this house. You're a very brave woman!
ReplyDeleteEwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww Not a pet for me!
ReplyDeleteI would have to say I could never own a snake either. I am scared sh*&less of spiders so I think I would be the same way about a snake. Are the rat dead or alive when you feed the snake?
